How to Host a Website on a Debian VPS

Debian is a popular operating system used by many of our customers. Like other Linux variants, it’s powerful, reliable and secure. Most importantly, it’s free. Debian is also known as the universal operating system since so many packages – 37,500 and counting – are available for installation.

One of the most popular applications is the Apache webserver. Here’s how to install it on Debian:

  1. Grab and run a webserver package, such as Apache:   apt-get install apache2
  2. This creates a basic configuration file under /etc/apache2
  3. Configure virtual hosts under /etc/apache2/sites-available/
  4. Enable the server with the command a2ensite FILENAME && invoke-rc.d apache2 force-reload

That’s it! For full details, check out the instructions here.
